With Voodoo experiences at the Python Temple (though if you don’t like snakes, you might want to avoid it) and Ouidah Voodoo City, incredible national parks and the chance to hobnob with royalty in Ganvie or Abomey, Benin, in West Africa, is an adventurer’s paradise. You won’t find hordes of tourists here, so if you really mean it when you say you’d like to get away from it all, this could be your perfect destination. You’ll be wowed by the palm-treed beaches on the coast, and enchanted by the Parc National de la Pendjari, with its cheetahs, hippos, elephants, lions and many other species. Visit the poignant Route des Esclaves where slaves were once transported, and see The Point of No Return memorial and you might be able to imagine that 12 million people were once enslaved. If you’re a foodie, you can challenge your palate with such delights as bush rat, goat, yams and palm root, and enjoy corn-cased dough served with a variety of sauces, fish and chicken.
