Mauritania is, sadly, subject to travel warnings at the moment, so only travel if you must. This beautiful desert country should definitely be on your travel list, with Unesco World Heritage Sites at Chinguetti, Ouadane and Oualata. Oulata also has a manuscript museum with examples of beautiful calligraphy. Go off-road in a 4×4 across the narrow canyons and hidden oases of the Adrar massif, and travel on the world’s longest train from Adrar to the coast. The Parc National du Banc d'Arguin is a sight to behold if you’re an ornithologist, with millions of migrating species every year, and a sight you’ll never forget is dolphins sending fish into shallower waters for the local tribesmen. You’ll recognise the food in many restaurants, with servings of pizza, salads, and hamburgers, but you can try the local dishes of fish and rice or meat and couscous, and even grilled sheep.
