Although a lesser visited holiday destination, Nicaragua is a place that draws in visitors with its restored colonial architecture, landscape mix of volcanoes, lakes, mountains and rainforests, and its general affordability. In the south-west you will find the beach town of San Juan Del Sur, Masaya, home to popular craft markets, and the Parque Nacional Volcan, the most accessible place for volcano viewing in the country. This is where you’ll find the majority of natives, although in the central highlands you’ll find some smaller towns to explore, surrounded by coffee plantations that sweep into the mountains. In contrast to other areas, the north-west is hot and dry, but the lively town of Leon and the surf beaches along the coast still attract plenty of visitors. Follow the crowds to the popular tourist areas, or visitor sites, and acclimatise to the heat for a different kind of holiday experience.
