Neighbouring Russia, Latvia sits on the Baltic Sea, between Estonia and Lithuania. In the summer, the resort of Jurmala is a hive of beachside activity, with visitors sunbathing, swimming and enjoying sports on the blue flag beach. However, over half of the country remains covered by sprawling forests, home to storks, beavers, otters and wolves. More frequently spotted are the hikers and cyclists taking advantage of the tranquil woodland. The capital Riga is a cultural hub, with concert halls and museums, art nouveau structures, and the Old Town’s medieval jewel, St Peter’s Church. When the sun goes down, Livu Square lights up with clubs and bars to entertain. Latvians enjoy a festival, whether it’s a music festival, or something more traditional. Fairytales, Vikings and cycling are just some of the things honoured in Latvia.
