Home to more bikes than people, The Netherlands’ open-minded attitude has always made it a popular destination for tourists. As one of the most densely populated nations on Earth, it’s no surprise that they’re trying to reclaim the large percentage of their country which is below sea level. Works by the Dutch masters, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Mondrian and Escher, can be seen in the many museums, while a real mix of architectural styles is visible across the country. Gothic, medieval, renaissance, post-modern and neo-modern movements have all played their part in the appearance of the cities and towns. It’s also a great place to visit if you’re eco-friendly. The Dutch have embraced sustainable living, with petrol and diesel cars banned from sale after 2025, in favour of their electric counterparts, the bicycle and of course, the wonderful canals. Their excellent diet topped an Oxfam list, which noted their plentiful supply of affordable, nutritious food.
