Turkey is a country of contrasts with a wide appeal. More than 35 million people visit it each year, as it offers great value for money, beautiful landscapes and diverse culture unlike anywhere else. It’s not just the beaches which draw them in. The main cities of Ankara, Edirne, Bursa, Antalya and Izmir are full of incredible architecture from the Ancient Greek, Ottoman and Roman eras and centuries of dramatic history. Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Mosque is full of the most intricate mosaic work you’ll ever see, and is just as impressive from the outside. Food is important to the Turks, and breakfast consists of cheeses, breads and sausages. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, baklava desserts will hit the spot, made from filo pasty with fillings of chopped nuts, honey and syrup. Believe it or not, Turkey also has some great skiing on offer. Head for the mountains between Erzurum and Kayseri for winter sport action, which really kicks off in November.
